7 Essential Updates to Spring Clean Your Squarespace Website
Be honest, when was the last time you gave your website some proper TLC? Just like that closet you've been meaning to organize or those windows begging for a good scrub, websites need regular maintenance too. Spring is the perfect excuse to roll up your sleeves and dive into some digital decluttering.
Keeping your website fresh each year isn’t just smart, it’s necessary. New SEO features, automation tools, and design options keep landing every few months. Ignoring them means you could miss out on better search rankings, faster performance, and a smoother experience for your visitors. This guide walks you through seven practical updates to make sure your website keeps working at its best and leaves a strong impression.
1. Check Your Copyright Date
A current copyright date in your site’s footer sends a simple yet strong message: this website is active and cared for. It shows visitors and search engines that you keep things up-to-date. Not only does this build trust with your audience, but it can also protect your content and help your SEO.
2. Check and fix broken links
A single broken link can be a dead end for your visitors and a negative signal for search engines.
How to Find Broken Links:
Use Google Search Console to view URLs returning “Not Found” errors (404s).
Try a free broken link checker tool such as Broken Link Checker or Dead Link Checker which scans your whole site.
How to Fix:
Edit the link directly on the page or blog post to point to the correct location.
If you moved or renamed a page set up a URL redirect.
3. Tidy Not Linked and Unused Pages
Not linked pages aren’t in your main navigation but are still live; anyone with the link can find them and will show up in search engines unless you hide them.
Go to Pages and review every page under “Not Linked.”
Identify pages you no longer need or plan to finish and either delete or disable the page.
For drafts or in-progress pages, consider disabling the page or password-protecting it.
For pages you want live but not findable on search engines, use the page SEO settings’ “Hide from Search Results” toggle option.
Regularly sorting your not linked and unused pages cuts down on website clutter, improves site structure, and prevents confusion for both users and search engines.
4. Utilize Squarespace’s AI SEO Tool for missing SEO and Alt-Text
The release of Squarespace’s AI SEO tool has made managing sitewide meta SEO, page metadata, and image alt text faster and easier for everyone.
Accessing the Tool: Go to Settings > Marketing > Select SEO Appearance > SEO Report
Running a Scan: The AI scans your site for missing titles, descriptions, and alt text.
Reviewing Suggestions: The AI doesn't know your business as well as you do. It's important to remember that these suggestions are just a starting point. You'll need to review and edit them carefully.
Saving Your Changes: Once you're happy with everything, hit "Save" and the missing SEO descriptions and alt-text will update across your website.

5. Update Site Content
Portfolio
Remove outdated or less relevant projects.
Add new work that matches the kind of projects you want more of.
Organize your portfolio by service or industry to help visitors find what matters to them.
Testimonials
Reach out to current or recent clients for new testimonials.
Featuring different types of feedback—quick wins, long-term successes, or before/afters—to keep the page interesting.
Services, pricing, and availability
Update your services list to match what you offer today.
Adjust descriptions to show any new skills, results, or unique selling points.
Check that your pricing is current. If you changed your rates, update them everywhere they appear.
Review contact forms or booking calendars to confirm everything works smoothly and displays the right info.
Refresh blog posts
Update outdated posts.
Add new content that reflects what you’re working on or what’s changing in your field.
Revamp top-performing posts with new insights, resources, or internal links to keep them ranking high in search results.
6. Update Images
Regular image refreshes signal to returning visitors that your website receives active maintenance and attention. It’s especially important to update your images if your business has changed, such as releasing new products, hiring team members, or relocating to a new office. Outdated imagery misrepresents your current business reality to potential customers.
And make sure to compress images before you upload them for faster load time. Tools you can use are Pixresize, Compress PNG or TinyPNG.
7. Check Instagram Feed Is Connected and Showing Recent Posts
When Instagram does an update it can affect the images appearing in your feed if you are using an Instagram block on your website. To get it working again here is what you can do.
Go to Settings > Third Party Tools > Connected Accounts
Click on Instagram and click Disconnect to remove the account.
Then select Connect Account to add Instagram back. You'll be prompted to authorize Squarespace to access your account. Follow the prompts to authenticate and relink your Instagram account.
Once your account is reconnected, go to the page where your Instagram block is located to ensure it's set up correctly.
Click the Edit button and click on the Instagram Block to access the block settings.
Make sure that the correct Instagram account is selected and that it is set to display the desired number of posts and layout.
If it's already selected and still doesn't seem to be updating, unselect it and then reselect it to sync again.
Final Thoughts
Taking the time to refresh your Squarespace site each year keeps your business ahead of the curve. When you update content, check technical settings, and keep everything connected, you give both visitors and search engines a reason to trust your site.
Set a yearly maintenance reminder so nothing slips through the cracks. Staying on top of these tasks means your site will always look sharp, load fast, and show clients you care about every detail.
